 Betty Hill (1919-2004)


  • The first surviving child of a well-established family from New Hampshire. Her father was a selectman and welfare agent. Her mother was a union organizer.
  • Her mother's ancestors arrived in the New World in 1637, as some the first settlers in Hampton, NH.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in social work from the University in New Hampshire.
  • Chairwoman of the Inter-Race Commission on campus and was offered the Chairmanship of the New England Student Christian Movement, formed in 1934 by the YMCA.
  • Inducted into the Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society.
  • Above average intelligence-a quick study.
  • Allegedly had an eidetic memory.
  • Nearly perished from a perforated colon in 1939. Saved by a sulfur drug.
  • Child welfare and adoption worker for the NH Welfare Department.
  • Promoted to supervisor.
  • Active in community affairs.
  • Active in state and national politics.
  • Active in human rights advocacy.
  • Secretary to local NAACP.
  • Termed a "walking encyclopedia" by her associates.
  • Vocal opponent of New Age ideology.
  • Vocal opponent of hypnosis for memory recovery by unqualified hypnotists.
  • Attacked by debunkers and disinformants.
  • Supported by scientists and military officers. 
  • Death from metastatic cancer in October2004.
