Barney Hill, Jr (1922-1969)

  • Born in Newport News, Virginia.
  • The youngest son of an upwardly mobile middle class family in Philadelphia. His father was employed by the US Post Office. 
  • Served honorably in the US Army during World War 2 as a qualified truck driver and marksman.
  • Above average intelligence-a quick study.
  • Completed high school and attended Temple University.
  • Employed by the US Postal Service.
  • Determined to fight for freedom, equal rights, and social justice as a means of promoting the upward movement of his people.
  • Loving father of two sons by his first wife.
  • Boy Scout leader in Philadelphia.
  • Second marriage to Eunice Elizabeth Barrett Stewart (Betty Hill) on May 12, 1960. 
  • Legal redress to NAACP locally and regionally.                    
  • Awarded a commendation by Sargent Shriver, US Office of Economic Opportunity (1965). 
  • Awarded a commendation for leadership in voters' rights (1965).
  • Appointed to the US Commission on Civil Rights NH State advisory committee (1965).
  • Invited to and attended Lyndon B.Johnson's presidential Inauguration (1965). 
  • Death in 1969 from a cerebral hemorrhage.
