Barney Hill, Jr (1922-1969)

  • The youngest son of an upwardly mobile middle class family in Philadelphia. His father was employed by the US Post Office. 
  • Served honorably in the US Army during World War 2 as a qualified truck driver and marksman
  • Above average intelligence-a quick study
  • Completed high school and attended Temple University
  • Employed by the US Postal Service
  • Determined to fight for freedom, equal rights, and social justice as a means of promoting the upward movement
  • Married Eunice Elizabeth Barrett Stewart (Betty Hill)on May 12, 1960 
  • Legal redress to NAACP locally and regionally                    
  • Awarded commendation by Sargent Shriver, US Office of Economic Opportunity 
  • Awarded commendation for leadership in voters' rights
  • Appointed to the US Commission on Civil Rights NH State advisory committee
  • Divorced father of two sons
  • Died in Portsmouth, NH, from a cerebral hemorrhage
